Well, hot DOG! A ‘super-lecker’ German-influenced Currywurst-Dog (VG)

Have you ever seen a hot dog, covered in a tomato/curry sauce, in a bun, making it look like a weird red chocolate Éclair?

Well now you have. How do you feel? Do you need to sit down? Yes, I did.

To my German friends I beg you, please don’t hunt me down for this – why did we do it? Well, honestly we had hot-dog buns left over in the freezer from our very last BBQ of the summer taking up a LOT of room, Moving Mountains plant based Hot Dogs and a craving for something spicy.

Thus, the Currywurst-dog, our version at least, was born.

We had just been to do our weekly food-shop… at 4.30pm… on a Friday… during lockdown v2. I realize this wasn’t entirely clever but we managed it and we got out alive! Understandably though we got home late so I needed to throw this together, and it was so simple I wanted to share it with y’all!

The inclusion of the bun means that sauce is easily mopped up, and the Moving Mountains sausages were NEXT LEVEL – highly recommend, even at the price point. Plus, I started eating it with a knife and fork (as you can see) but the sauce is so thick that actually you have no issues just picking it up and going for it. So – guten appetit!

This curried dog is just the Wurst

  • Servings: 6 hot-dogs
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Print

Don't judge me Germany, it tasted good!

Ingredients

For the Sauce:

  • 1 tin Chopped Tomatoes
  • 60ml Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 3 tbsp thick Tomato Paste
  • 1-2 tbsp Tomato Sauce (Ketchup)
  • 3 tbsp mild Curry Powder (I used Medium by accident and ouch)
  • 1 heaped tbsp Sweet or Smoked Paprika
  • 2 tbsp Coconut Sugar (you can use any kind, but Coconut is slightly healthier)
  • 1/2 tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 “glug” Vegan Worcestershire Sauce (~0.5 tsp)
  • 1/4 tsp Liquid Smoke
  • 3/4-1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Granules

Plus:

  • 6 Moving Mountains Vegan Hot Dogs (you can sub in any other Vegan Sausage here but you might not get the same result)
  • 6 Hot-Dog Buns

Directions

  1. Prepare the sausages to the packet instructions – the Moving Mountains ones take 15 minutes in hot water.
  2. Meanwhile – put all of the sauce ingredients in a blender / food-processor (we just use the Nutribullet) and blend until smooth, taste and add additional salt or curry powder as necessary then put sauce in a pan and heat through on a low heat for the remaining cooking time of the hot-dogs.
  3. If your hot dog buns aren’t, like ours, pre-cut – prep them now.
  4. Serve the hot dogs in the buns topped with a liberal amount of the sauce, I found about 1.5 ladles to a bun worked best (it should be nice and thick.
  5. Serve topped with a sprinkle of curry powder and a generous helping of German Oktoberfest and/or beer-drinking music.

Buon Appetito!
