Peanut Butter and Berry Porridge – also known as Best Weekday Breakfast (VG, GF option)

Happy Sunday everyone (or Monday, depending on where you are in the world)! We have had a busy couple of weeks with being away on a snug holiday in England and then catching up on work and celebrating Chris’ birthday, but we will hopefully be slowing down a bit over the coming weeks as we head towards winter. And what a winter it will be… I hope everyone is taking care of themselves and treating both themselves and those around with kindness. We are navigating a difficult time and, whilst I am confident that we will get through this successfully, it can all take a toll on us mentally, emotionally and even physically.

Last Saturday (10th October) was World Mental Health Day, and it served as a reminder that we have to look after our mental health just as much as we do after our physical health. If you are feeling alone or struggling, please reach out – to a friend, a family member or a local mental health service. We are all doing the best we can, and the truth is that sometimes life can feel overwhelming, with so much going on both around us and inside our own heads. But I promise you it is all worth it, and it is never too late to make a change and learn to break free from beliefs and habits that are hurting you. There is so much to discover and so much to experience in this life, and you don’t have to go through the pain or sadness you are feeling on your own. Treat yourself with the same patience and compassion you would offer a child, because you don’t have to have it all figured out already. Give yourself permission to accept how you feel and also trust that you will overcome this and things will get better. Life is messy, but it is also beautiful, and you deserve to experience all the beauty this world has to offer. Reaching out to someone to support you is the first and most important step in getting through a tough time, because you don’t have to go through it on your own.

I really do hope the above serves as a reminder that it’s ok not to be ok and that reaching out is not a sign of weakness, but of strength. It’s helpful to hear this every now and then – I know we could all benefit from hearing this more often so we can remember to treat ourselves better.

Now back to today’s post. This recipe is probably the one we make most often in our home, as it is our go-to breakfast Monday to Friday. It is quick and easy, nourishing and filling, and the best way to start the work/school day. And now that the days getting shorter and colder, it’s really comforting to warm up with a bowl of delicious peanut butter & berry porridge in the morning.

We used to buy the Quaker Original porridge sachets, however we are trying to be more environmentally friendly and realised we don’t need to use the sachets to make a quick porridge breakfast. We switched to Flahavan’s Irish quick oats, which came in a cute box and have a scoop measure, and we decided to keep the box and scoop to store and measure our non-branded porridge oats going forward. You can use either rolled or quick oats – whichever you prefer. Rolled oats are chunkier than quick oats and more nutritious, whereas quick oats make a creamier porridge, but have undergone more processing than rolled oats.

You can also easily make this gluten-free by using gluten-free oats like the ones below instead. And if you don’t like or can’t have peanut butter, you can substitute it for a different nut butter.

Self-care can mean so many different things, and for me having a highly nutritious breakfast is definitely a way to practice self-care. If you give it a go, I hope you enjoy it 🙂

Peanut Butter and Berry Porridge

A quick and highly nourishing breakfast recipe



  • 20g Oats
  • 120ml unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter
  • a handful of frozen mixed berries, defrosted in the microwave


  1. Add the oats and almond milk to a bowl
  2. Microwave for 90-110 seconds on high power
  3. Take the porridge out of the microwave and give it a stir, then add the berries to the microwave and set them on defrost mode for a 90-120 seconds
  4. Add the flaxseed and the peanut butter to the porridge bowl and mix, then stir in the berries
  5. Enjoy!
